The MAINLINERS

Desde Ludvika, en el corazón de Suecia, llega la energía sin límites de uno de los mejores grupos de Garage europeos de los ultimos años. Su historia comienza a finales de los 90, cuando 5 jóvenes aburridos de no tener nada que hacer e unidos por la misma pasión, se juntan para expresar con Rock’n’Roll todas sus frustraciones. The Boys se hacian llamar. Unos años despues los ya no tan jóvenes chicos se convierten en hombres y deciden huir de la depresión de su pequeña ciudad con la común obsesión de conquistar el mundo armados con un poderoso y visceral sonido. Y así decidieron lanzar la bestia a la carga y ser conocidos desde entonces como The MAINLINERS. Continuaron tocando en Suecia y el resto de Escandinavia, en pequeños clubs o grandes festivales, haciendo correr la voz de la maestría salvaje de su explosivo directo. Hasta que en el 2003 el pequeño sello sueco “Rebel Nation Records” lanzó su primer single. Y según cuentan, se agotó antes de que el grupo supiera que había salido. Siguieron tocando cada vez con más fuerza hasta que sus furiosos fans les obligaron a sacar un segundo single. En el verano del 2004 es editado “Dead Mans Hall/Daughter of Dimes” esta vez en el sello “Crusher Records” y casi les mata… Al mismo tiempo, en una tierra lejana al otro lado del Atlántico, a un hombre llamado Gregg Kostelich y su sello “Get Hip Records” le llegan las noticias sobre la bestia maldita en el frío de Suecia y decide acudir a su rescate. La buscaron, la acecharon, hasta que por fin consiguieron atraparla. La mantuvieron alejada de la multitud…

Compuesto por 12 canciones, todas ellas originales.

Comienzan apretando al personal con un demoledor “Bring on the sweet life”. En este disco la rabia viene en contenedores, tal y como lo demuestran en “Shinkin’ feeling”, “She’s an overdose”, “Daughter of dines”...pero tienen sus momentos de debilidad melancólica con un impresionante “Dead mans hall”. La siguiente cara la comienzan bastante más relajados que la anterior, con “Queen Sativa” “Loosin’ my mind” y “The lonely one”. Llegando a los límites vinílicos nos encontramos c on otro temazo. Se trata de “Crocodile roll”. Es una descarga de potencia aferrándose al sonido más crudo y salvaje. El disco finaliza con otro holocáustico tema; “Try to bring us down”. Canela in ramen!!

No pierdas el tiempo buscando nuevas bandas scandinavas sin antes haber escuchado a The MAINLINERS un quinteto de garage-rock’n’roll, en los que el mismisimo Gregg Kostelich (The Cynics) se ha fijado para publicarles su primer larga duración en su sello Get-Hip. Desde sus primeros singles (incluidos en este disco) “Dead Mans Hall”, un medio tiempo que bien pudieran haber firmado Them o The Animals, y “She’s An Overdoze” que tiene un punto garage-beat rabioso al que te engancharás a la primera escucha. “Queen Sativa” está pensado para ser publicado en single y a la que podria acompañar un tema muy stoniano como “Loosing My Mind”. Y debes prestar atención a las canciones que abren y cierran el disco, para comenzar el tremendo tema que dá titulo al LP “Bring On The Sweetlife” y para cerrar “Try To Bring Us Down”. No puedes dejar escapar este disco repleto de Rhythm & Blues salvaje y realmente contagioso, garage de los 60’s a los 90’s, una gozada si escuchas a bandas como Pretty Things, The Cynics, The Hives, The Remains, The Standells… alguna pista más?. The MAINLINERS darán mucho (y bien ) que hablar, luego no digas que no te hemos avisado.

Scandinavia has taken over from Australia as the hotbed of tough, Detroit-sounding garage bands, and here¹s the latest Swedish foursome to pump up the grunge on the hard, ¹60s -esque dirty party rock ¹n¹ roll. Like a modern Animals, Them, Hives, Lyres, Pretty Things, Prisoners, Electric Prunes, and Hoodoo Gurus, The Mainliners kick, holler, shout, groove, and shake it as though dance floors are still populated by women in miniskirts go -going to wild R&B-mod rock rather than coked-out fashionistas blankly discoing to techno or suburbanites sweating to the oldies. Until their recent name change the third band I¹ve heard of called The Boys, The Mainliners channel The Action and Mott the Hoople‹Mott on the streamlined “Daughter of Dimes,” with Robert Billing¹s hot-blooded, sexy, glammy yowling. There¹s a bit of “Heart of Stone"-bluesy Rolling Stones to “Dead Mans Hall,” too, but it¹s all filtered through the Detroit roughness. Two of these guys have throwback ¹60s bowl haircuts while two others sport shoulder -length locks in a perfect illustration of the two influences at work. Bring on The Mainliners!

SHINDIG MAGAZINE - (LONDON) REVIEW:
I first came across this band in the summer of 2001, sadly not on stage but merely in the audience, at a sixties garage festival in Upssala, Sweden, and was fortunate to be given a copy of their demo recording. Since then I’ve been wondering why I’ve not seen any actual records released. (It turns out that they have, in fact, had two singles out already – but they sold out so rapidly that there was no chance of them reaching us here in London, alas.) Even back then, when they looked barely old enough to be out of school, these five young men were already amongst the absolute best of the current crop of sixties influenced bands.
The main musical influences here are the rhythm’n’blues inspired beat groups of the sixties, with the likes of Them and the Animals coming instantly to mind. There’s a lot more to them than that though – they’re definitely not just a retro act. If I were forced to compare the Mainliners with any other band it would be the Greenhornes. Yes, they really are that good! The performances are gritty but without being sloppy, the band’s confidence really shining through. It’s a totally solid recording and one in which you can really feel their love for the music – it’s aggressive, driving, at times explosive, but also smooth, polished, mellifluent. The Mainliners have what it takes to follow fellow Swedes the Hives into the wider public consciousness. Murray Absich
